What makes a consultation productive

The visits that end with a firm price on the spot all have the same things in common. None of them requires any preparation you would need a professional to do.

• A decision-maker present. Most of the consultation is decisions — which way it opens, how high it sits, what it matches. Those go much faster in person at the actual opening than by text afterwards.
• Access to the whole job. Both sides of a gate opening, under the deck if a guard is being replaced, the inside and outside of a window getting bars. What we cannot see, we cannot price firmly.
• A photo of anything it has to match. An existing fence section, the other half of the staircase, the neighbour’s gate you liked. Straight on, plus one close-up.
• Any drawings you have. Especially for structural work. Send them ahead rather than handing them over on the day.
• Whether automation or a later phase is coming. Both are dramatically cheaper designed in now than retrofitted onto finished metalwork.

What you will have at the end

Scope and price, before anything is scheduled. What the piece is, what it is made of, what finish it carries, what the installation involves and what it costs. A real timeline rather than a placeholder. And, where it applies, a plain statement of anything that needs your building department’s sign-off before we fabricate.
